Once upon a time, there was a gamer named Jason who liked to play games, World of Warcraft in particular. He was engaged to the evil Ice Queen Katie, an engagement he felt as necessary because he did not want to be alone forever. He bought the Ice Queen a rather expensive, and, in his opinion, ugly, ring (this will come into play later in our story). In the world of World of Warcraft, teams of people work together, each controlling a character that they created in the game. These teams of people, called guilds, work together to kill dragons, demons, and minions of evil. Southshore Mafia, a meager guild of friends housed Fendicano, a human mage played by Jason. Over time, the guild became well known and grew quite large. One new recruit, Emocube, a Night Elf rogue, played by Amanda was overlooked by Jason at first. Slowly, as the two started to play together, they became friends. As the two became better friends, the topic gradually shifted towards how unhappy Jason’s home life was. Katie was controlling, demanding, and expensive, leaving Jason a very unhappy groom to be. Amanda was able to convince Jason that there could be better fish in the sea and that he should ruin his life for nothing. To make a long story short, Jason realized that Katie was not the person he was destined to be with for the rest of his life. When Katie left, she decided that she was not giving back the ring, but Jason considered it a small price to pay to be rid of her forever. Sadly, after breaking up with Katie, Jason did not fully examine his feelings for Amanda due to the distance between him and her. Jason, never having been one who took long to recover, threw his bobber out there for another try at another fish in the sea. It did not take long to get a hit. The fish was a friend of Jason’s (we’ll call her “What’s-her-face”). “What’s-her-face” and Jason dated for a couple of months before she started getting a little too serious for Jason. This happened to be around the same time Jason and Amanda’s guild was having a real life party, with people coming from out of state (particularly, Amanda). When Jason met Amanda, it was magical and he knew that he could not, in good conscience continue dating “What’s-her-face.” Amanda had already found a special place in Jason’s heart. After a few plane trips for Jason and Amanda, Jason decided that he would move out to live with Amanda. He packed his car to the brim with all of his possessions and drove to Arizona. I would like to tell you that Jason and Amanda lived happily ever after at this point, but, sadly, that did not happen. The evil Ice Queen Katie still could not tolerate Jason’s happiness. She chose after Jason’s move to lay the bomb on him that she was suing him for a loan she had taken out under their name while they were together. Amanda, being the supportive girlfriend she was, helped Jason to obtain legal advice, and even drove with him from Arizona to Kansas to be at his court hearing. Jason did not win the case, but, thanks to her keeping the ring, neither did the evil Ice Queen Katie. After some time living in a small townhome, Jason and Amanda bought a house. Shortly after, Jason asked Amanda’s mother if he could marry her. Amanda’s mother said yes, so he gleefully went off to buy the ring. On the eve of Jason and Amanda’s 2 year anniversary of dating, Jason reserved the kitchen table at a fine Italian restaurant, and there he proposed to Amanda. …She said “No.” But then a wide smile crossed her face and tears welled up in her eyes and she said “yes.” That is the story of Fendi and Emo past…all that is left is their future. |
I don’t really know where to start, since Jason’s really laid it all out. When I first started playing Warcraft, no one really wanted anything to do with me, until I said I was a girl, and then I had so much help, I didn’t know what to do with it. Jason, or Fendicano, was one of those people. But, after a while, and weeding a few people out, he was one of the ones I played with more often than not. During that time we had many long talks; most of them were about how unhappy he was with his fiancé. Being one to have never settled (ha ha, let’s not review my past) I couldn’t understand why someone else would. Why they would even make a promise to spend their life with someone who they could barely tolerate or stand. It just baffled me. Being the all knowing that I am, again, keep the laughter down, I basically told him to dump and run… and well, he pretty much did. Pretty bold thing to do for both of us: me giving advice to a complete stranger, and that complete stranger actually listening to me. The day after he broke it off with his fiancé, I pretty much felt like crap knowing that I was the one who broke them up (essentially.) I kept ranting and raving about what a home wrecker I was. Jason wouldn’t hear of it, and as soon as he got off work, he managed to wrangle my phone number, and gave me a call to reassure me that it was the right decision for him, and that I was not a home wrecker. His voice turned me into putty. That was the first and only time we talked (one on one) until we met face to face months later. That also started off a beautiful journey into the next step of our relationship: me hating him, and him ignoring me. :) Shortly after he broke it off with his fiancé, we were playing together late one night, but something was different. He was acting really odd, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. A few days later he basically gave me a “break up” type talk, and I eventually got out of him that he had invited someone over; who he claimed “seduced” him. I didn’t really buy it, and he said it was “nothing” and that nothing was really going to happen from it but I heard differently from some people who knew him, who I also talked to, so at that point, I felt slightly betrayed, even though we had no real “relationship” to speak of. After about 7 months of playing the game, and a few months of Jason and I ignoring each other, I decided that it was time to meet some of the people that I was spending the majority of my spare time with. I bought the tickets, and headed off to Bartlesville, Oklahoma (it’s about as exciting as it sounds :P) without really telling anyone. I did tell one person, in case I came up missing, so they knew where to look, but I pretty much wanted to save myself from the ridicule of “meeting people online” and “risking my life” to meet “strangers.” They weren’t strangers to me… they were my friends. When I was making plans, I told John and Kathy (who were pretty much my “hosts” for the weekend) that I really didn’t want anything to do with Jason, I didn’t want to meet him, I didn’t want to see him at the party, or the barbeque we were having, at his friends house of all places, and I didn’t want him anywhere near me! When I was sitting in the airport, I was bored, and unblocked him (that’s how much I loathed him) to tell him I didn’t really want anything to do with him when I came. I was going for a good time with good company, and he wasn’t welcome! He didn’t really accept that, and gave me the “well, if that’s what you really want…” speech.
When I got to John and Kathy’s house, Lawrence, who lives a hop skip and a jump away from them, asked if he could come over so we could meet. Sure, why not? It’s just Lawrence. Wrong-o, guess who came with him? That’s right Jason. From that moment on, I was pretty much putty in his hands. He came over drunk, and even though I’m sure everyone could see the hearts forming in my eyes, it was really awkward to meet him: to put a voice and a person to a face, a real live human being, and not just pictures or animations on a screen. I asked Kathy to leave, and we went to “go get drinks” hoping that they would be gone by the time we got back, and they were. A little while after, I asked if they could take me to my hotel, as I had been in school all morning, and flying all afternoon, and I was beat. When I got to my hotel, I logged into the game to let everyone know I arrived safely, and guess who popped online… There was Jason, again! He asked if he could come over and apologize for everything that he did to piss me off. At first, I was hesitant, but I figured, apologies can’t hurt, and it seemed like a good peace offering, so I let him come to my hotel, despite everyone telling me that I shouldn’t. He came over, and apologized for his behavior that night, and the rest of the time we had lost touch, and not communicated clearly. We spent the entire night talking, and getting to know each other (despite what everyone thinks happened) and ending up falling asleep about 5 am… From there… well, I’m sure you can see where the story goes… |
The Engagement
I’d be lying if I said it started out a day like any other… I didn’t go to work, and stayed home to clean (which never really happened) and Jason went in to work early because we didn’t carpool. The plan was to go to dinner, and a movie. I was a little irked at the fact that Jason made reservations at Buca di Beppo for 7:30, because he knows I hate eating late. He got home at 2:30 (which was super early, and I wasn’t expecting him that early, hence the no cleaning) and we spent an hour trying to pick out a good movie location and time. We took so long because no movies started at a good time, and if they did start at a good time, they were in a far away location not giving us enough time to get to our reservations. We went and saw Saw V (romantic isn’t it?) because the first movie we saw together (which was when we first met) was Saw III. We got out of the movie, with about an hour to spare, which really left us with no options of things we could do. We ended up walking around the promenade where the theater is, and going in and out of random stores. We went to PetsMart, and I tried to bribe him into letting me get another pet, and he told me that I couldn’t pull the “but it’s our anniversary” card, so no kitten. We then headed to Office Max to see if we could find some accessories for the anniversary present that I got him, no luck. By that time, we still had about 15 minutes until we needed to start driving, so we decided to head over to Buca di Beppo anyway to see if our table was ready.
We got to Buca at about 7:00, and Jason walked up to the host, and told him that we had reservations for 7:30, but wondered if the table was ready. The guy, unknowingly ruined the surprise by asking, “You had the kitchen table, right?” when the hostess comes up and says, “Don’t do that, I bet you just ruined the surprise,” to which she turned to us and asked, “he ruined the surprise, didn’t he?” Jason smiled, and nodded, but reassured her it was OK. I knew something was up at this point, I just didn’t know what.
We took our seat at the kitchen table, which is literally that… a singular table, secluded from the rest of the restaurant, and in the kitchen, so you get to watch them prepare the food, and have a bit of quiet. We ordered a Spicy Arrabbiata Pizza for our appetizer, a pitcher of Sangria, and Penne Campofiore for our entree. We got our bread, and started drinking the Sangria, which got me nicely sauced with the first cup, and Jason started grilling me with questions like:
Jason: So, it’s been two years, you think you can put up with me forever?
Amanda: I’ve put up with you this long, haven’t I? ;) (I’m a smart ass when I drink.)
Jason: But, are you sure you can put up with me, FOREVER…
Amanda: Uhm, yeah, I haven’t killed you yet… :D
Jason: Are you suuuuuuuuure?!
Amanda: (getting annoyed at this point) Yessssssss.
**Enter the kissing, and our waitress stopping by to tell us how nice it is to see a couple so in love, and how a couple who had reserved the table before us were celebrating 20 years together, and they just kind of sat there, not holding hands or kissing, etc… **
Amanda: Did you pay her to say that?
Jason: Would, I do that?
Amanda: Yes!
Jason: No… (I’m still convinced Jason paid her to say that…)
**I reached into my purse to get some chap stick, and turned around to a ring in my face**
Jason: Amanda Hope Speth… will you spend forever with me?!
Amanda: No, (and I started laughing to try and hide my tears) …OF COURSE!
He put the ring on my finger, and the rest of the night, I had a big goofy grin on my face! :D
